“There's cosmic significance hiding in the heart of our turkey day tradition.”
-Donna Woodwell
Have you found yourself staring down the oncoming holiday season with a big helping of disillusionment in recent years?
Do you ever find yourself going through the motions of all things “holiday” wondering: Why are we even doing this?
Trust me when I tell you I understand. In fact, I understand so deeply that I’m actively reimagining my own traditions.
When I found out that holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas had fascinating connections to astrology… so much of the meaning and magic I was yearning for came back.
So if you’re not feeling especially excited about Thanksgiving (or if you're not in the U.S. but would love an excuse to celebrate), then you are cordially invited to join me in celebrating Jupiter Day!
Why have I reframed Thanksgiving into an astrological celebration for myself?
Well, a few years ago, Astrologer Donna Woodwell made the case that Thanksgiving is actually an astrologically-based holiday, inspired by JUPITER.
Many astrologers have since confirmed this for me and every time I get more evidence I get so excited!
Some of you may remember me recounting Donna’s fascinating points last year, but for those of you who want the scoop, here are her key points:
- The Timing: American Thanksgiving is celebrated on the 4th Thursday of November. If you stop to think about it, isn't it kind of random to have a holiday tied to the last Thursday in a month? Why this particular day?
Because celebrating Thanksgiving on the 4th Thursday in November ensures the holiday will ALWAYS happen when the Sun is in Sagittarius, the sign ruled by Jupiter. Plus, Thursday is the day of the week astrologically connected to Jupiter (“Thor's Day”). As Donna points out, “that's a double dose of Jupiter!”
- The Proclamation: Abraham Lincoln invited his fellow citizens to “set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens.”
Now some may say Lincoln was referring simply to God, but if you decode the specific language used it could just as easily be about JUPITER! Donna says the name Jupiter is a Latinized version of dues-pater, which translates as sky-father, or god-father. Also, in astrology, Jupiter is called the Greater Benefic, a god of wealth, abundance, and gratitude. Jupiter is the original template for the benefic sky god (aka “the beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens”).
- The Symbols & Traditions: One of the main symbols of Thanksgiving is the Cornucopia or the “Horn of Plenty.” The Cornucopia is a goat horn filled to the brim with fruits, vegetables, flowers, nuts and grains… and it also happens to be the gift bestowed by Jupiter (aka Zeus) to those who cared for him.
Jupiter's color in Indian Astrology is saffron yellow, the official color of Thanksgiving, and the herbs and aromatic smells of Thanksgiving (cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, sage, chestnut and maple) are also associated with the planet Jupiter.
AND Donna says that “anything that helps us feel uplifted and united with something larger than ourselves is Jupiter's domain.”
So if you want to reimagine your own holiday tradition, I hope these incredible astrological insights connect you to Jupiterian qualities you can really celebrate like joy, abundance, expansion, and gratitude, no matter where you are in the world.
As I get ready for my own Jupiterian extravaganza with my family, I want to say THANK YOU…
I am so grateful that you are a part of this star-loving soul family.
HAPPY JUPITER DAY!
In gratitude,
