And this time I wanted to talk to you about Saturn entering the zodiac sign of Aries on May 24th. Now, Saturn entering a zodiac sign is rarely any sort of cause for celebration. In fact, oftentimes the reaction to Saturn entering a new sign is one of dread.

It's like, oh no, Saturn. Isn't that the the spoiler planet of astrology? Isn't that the one that brings all sorts of misfortune and ill luck and things like that? Well, Saturn does have a bit of, negative reputation, but it's mostly because it's been misunderstood through the centuries more than anything having to do with Saturn's character. Now, it is true that Saturn is what we call a malefic planet and astrology.

There are two malefic planets, Mars and Saturn, and these are planets that were associated with something negative or with a negative energy or a negative force. Let's juxtapose it here for a quick moment. There are two benefic planets in astrology, and those two planets are Venus and Jupiter. And they're said to bring good things. Now, the reason why Venus and Jupiter are said to bring good things, and why they were seen as benefic or positive lights in the sky, is because both Venus and Jupiter are very pure light in the sky.

First of all, when you see them in the sky, they're the brightest planets. After the sun and the moon. And yes, the sun and the moon are regarded as planets in astrology, but they're the purest and they're the widest light. Mars and Saturn on the other hand, weren't very pure and weren't very white. Mars, if you ever see Mars in the nighttime sky, has a sort of ruddy red kind of color.

And so there was something about Mars that was just like off color. It was red, all right. And red, of course, was associated to the blood and to war. And indeed, Mars is named after the Roman god of war. And then there was Saturn. Saturn was a faded light. Saturn. Saturn's a light that you have to sort of really look for with the naked eye.

And when you finally find it, there it is. And it moves very slowly across the sky. Other planets sort of go in and out of the zodiac signs and make their rounds rather quickly. But Saturn, Saturn can feel like it takes forever.

So Mars is named after the Roman god of war. Was seen as a destructive energy. As an energy that came crashing into your life and. Yeah. And conquered your life. That that made you feel embattled, like you were under attack. And Saturn. Saturn was seen as a withholding energy. That the things that you wanted, that the things that you strived for, that you were hoping to win, always remained out of reach.

And so Saturn was associated with a withholding energy, one that made you feel like you were suffering setbacks or you were suffering delays in your life or even outright failure. So these two planets were sort of seen as the bad boys, astrology, and they are the planets that people sort of keep an eye out for warily and sort of watch out for.

Not unlike a herd of antelopes checking out the, lions on the African Serengeti. Okay, so, you know, there's always this feeling of, like, you better watch out for those two planets that's going on. So Saturn has this reputation for being very heavy, for being very slow, and for being very grim. All right. Saturn was associated to melancholia and to depression.

And indeed, when Saturn is going through your own astrological sign, there can be a depression of your own solar energies during that period of time. So when we think of Saturn, we want to remember that Saturn is a planet of tests, trials and tribulations. All right. And if you remember what it was like when the teacher announced that you were going to have a pop quiz in school, then you kind of have an idea of what it's like finding out when Saturn is going into a sign that's going to impact you.

At first, we might sort of look at those as being negative things. But actually, if you work with the energy of Saturn right there can actually turn into very benevolent things.

A sign that was sort of acting and behaving and, and and freely expressing itself and every which way. All of a sudden is now going to feel very inhibited, censored, even confined in a way.

What's difficult about being a Gemini or in this case, because Saturn is entering the zodiac sign of Aries? What's difficult about being an Aries? Aries we're all pretty familiar with in astrology, it's the first sign of the zodiac.

The reason why Aries is the first sign of the zodiac is because of Aries is association with the spring equinox. It's the first sign of the agricultural year, as it's experienced here in the Northern hemisphere. So Aries is the zodiac sign of the spring equinox. But when we put Saturn into Aries, there's this idea that you're being forced to go where you've never gone before. All right. So it's not like I'm going where no one's gone before. I'm feeling very pioneering and adventurous and and let's see what the world's like, you know, beyond the blue horizon.

All right. When it's Saturn in Aries, you're being forced to go in a direction that you've never done before. And forced could be someone who's forcing you to do it. It could be circumstances that are forcing you to leave one place and go to another place, to to go in a direction that you've never been before. And so there is an aloneness to it, and there's a path that's unknown, that you're traveling, a direction that you're traveling, that you've never gone before.

So Aries looks at challenges and obstacles as, as as opportunities to prove their mettle. To prove their, abilities, their aptitudes, their intellectual superiority.

And way out there past Jupiter was Saturn, the old guy, the slow planet, the dimmest light.

Okay, so so to Saturn, who was, named after the Roman god of time and who takes his name from the Greek deity Kronos. Saturn was time. And time can be very slow, and it can be very remote. And time doesn't really care about our day to day, minute by minute. You know, life, you know, because time, literally takes its time.

Okay. And Saturn was until the discovery of the moderns Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, the last of the, ancient planet. So it was the oldest and it was the most remote. Now there's a phrase. There is a phrase that you might be familiar with, which is truth is the daughter of time. All right. It's a very well-known phrase.

I originally thought it was a proverb. And was the surprise to discover that it's not. It's actually a phrase made, first uttered or spoken or coined or originated with, Sir Francis Bacon, the famous English philosopher and statesman. And what what the idea was, is that truth is the daughter of time means that when enough time passes, the truth will emerge.

All right. And what's kind of fast nating about that? You know, that truth is very slow to emerge is that truth isn't really understood in the moment. Truth isn't really understood with urgency. That truth will emerge after a passage of time. That's what we look to when we talk about history. All right. We may think that this is so in the moment, but hindsight is 2020, you know, looking over your shoulder and looking at how far you've come or what you've experienced in your life.

Hindsight is 2020. In hindsight, is the idea of truth being the daughter of time. You know, maybe you experienced this when you were a teenager or something like, I love him or I love her and and we're going to get married. We could get married into your parents. Like, you know, when you get older, you'll see that it's not there. Now. You're not respecting me. I'm 13. I know what I want, you know? This is the most important thing. This is it, you know, and then there's friends or colleagues or whatever who will say, give it time, sleep on it, let some time pass. You may not be no, no, this is it, you know. And and when time passes, it's like, what was I thinking? Or I was only 13 or, you know, whatever.

And so truth is the daughter of time that when enough time passes, the truth will emerge. However, Francis Bacon's complete phrase is, truth is the daughter of time, not of authority. Now, I love that, you know, truth is the daughter of time, not of authority. So you will have people stamping the moment you will have people in power or superiors or people over you saying, this is the truth and this is what you should believe, and this is the way that things happened.

But according to Bacon's phrase, truth is the daughter of time and not authority. And what he was saying there is authority doesn't last forever. Okay? You can have someone in power who says this is the way you know of the world, or this is what you should believe, or this is the history of our nation or the history of our people.

Well, that person isn't going to be in power forever, okay? That person has a lifespan. And time might be up, you know, and the person passes away, or a regime or a way of thinking doesn't last forever. They're not in power forever. And that's really a fascinating idea to me because Saturn itself, Saturn himself, I mean, the god that the planet is named after, overthrew his father.

So this idea of an overthrowing of an authority or being an authority that can be overthrown is this sort of anxiety that's baked into the character of the planet Saturn? But it can also describe Saturn's reputation in an astrological chart of being equally staunched and fixed in its resistance to authority, in its resistance to doing things the way that other people do them. The last point that I want to make with this is that Saturn is the planet of irony, all right? And irony is a really important word to keep in mind as we're traveling through the next two and a half years of Saturn being in the zodiac sign of Aries.

Now, irony is something that I think we all know. You know, like that was ironic or that there was an ironic twist. But irony, I find, is a really hard word to describe. Okay, you could sort of define it, but it doesn't really fit what irony is, you know, and it's a very difficult word to describe. Let's begin with tragic irony. Okay. That's that's what I became familiar with, you know, tragic irony. When I was, going to drama school at the Juilliard School in New York City. Okay, when we are learning acting and things like that, we are learning all about tragic irony, you know, and so it's like, wow, what's tragic irony?

Well, in a nutshell, tragic irony is the story of Oedipus Rex. You may remember Oedipus Rex, either from the Freudian theory of the Oedipal complex or Oedipus Rex in in the story of, you know, killing his father and marrying his mother. Oedipus Rex is a Greek tragedy. And to be brief about it, it's essentially the story of a prince who goes and sees an oracle.

And the oracle says one day you will marry your mother and kill your father. And Oedipus is, like, horrified by that, since he loves his mother and he loves his father, and and he absolutely adores and respects them, and that is going to kill his father. Marry his mother. And as he's, traveling, he meets a charioteer on the road, you know, and and this charioteer is, is rushing at him with breakneck speed, you know, with his chariot and the horses galloping right at him. Get out of my way. Get out of my way. You know, and he's he's actually, coming right at Oedipus. And Oedipus is really frightened, and and he steps out of the way. But the chariot charioteer kind of like, swerves. I mean, he's being he's driving recklessly and being really aggressive, and he actually whips out a bit. Okay, he has this as he going by.

And and this infuriates Oedipus. And he hops up the back of the chariot, you know, in Ben-Hur or whatever like that, and, you know, wrest the whip out of the territories. And they, they grapple and, and and, you know, he slugs him the chariot slugs back, and he slugs him again, and the, chariot spins out of control and the chariot is killed.

And Oedipus is like, you know, and he's like, oh, my God, he was going to kill me, you know? And this, this, this person. It's crazy. It's horrible. It's like, I can't let, this is all fun and things being ancient, crazy. Like, he travels down the road, I mean, there there's no cop car. There's no one to report this to.

What? He just. And the guy was going to, you know, run him down. And so he leaves him where he is and continues down the road and is quickly distracted by his sphinx, which is, lion bodied woman. So it's a woman with a, it's a creature with a woman's head, an alliance body, and enormous wings.

And it's sitting there, you know, on, perched on these rocks. And Oedipus is like, what, a fantastical creature. And the Sphinx is like, I am a fantastical creature, and you cannot go any further. And he's like, I have to answer a riddle. And she's like, yes. And you also have to answer it successfully. And Oedipus is like, well, what if I don't answer it successfully? And so Oedipus looks over the edge and he sees this heap of corpses, you know, that's with twisted bodies and limbs that have been thrown to pieces or torn to pieces.

And he's like, oh my God. Like, you know. And he's like, looks back at the Sphinx that she's like, are you ready to answer my return? You know, and Oedipus is like, I really hope so.
