There was a 12th Century Renaissance c. 1050-1250, the time of Abelard & Heloise, John of Salisbury, Geoffrey of Monmouth, Wolfram von Eschenbach, Hildegard von Bingen, Theophilus, Chretian de Troyes, the great music of Leonin and Pertain and the monophonic tradition of the the Troubadours and Trouveres, etc. BTW 1226 was the year of the death of St. Francis of Assisi.

In my humble opinion the Renaissance would have began in Southern France if the Albigensian Crusade (1209-1229) had not occurred.
